Our school counseling program at Valley Vista provides classroom, group, and individual guidance and counseling. As the school counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the academic, personal, and social development of all students. I am available to meet with students individually should a problem arise. I also conduct small groups during lunch and recess times which focus on important social skills. Throughout the year, I will make classroom visits which focus on important skills and character traits. I absolutely love working with the students at Valley Vista as well as collaborating with the wonderful teachers and staff here.
Fostering leadership is so important to us at Valley Vista. We believe that “Today’s Learners are Tomorrow’s Leaders”. I am lucky enough to supervise both the Hospitality Team and the Conflict Managers. The Hospitality Team is a group of 4th graders selected by their teachers to be friendly student ambassadors to the school. Our Conflict Managers are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders who are trained to be peacemakers and to help others resolve their conflicts.
We want Valley Vista to be a place where students feel safe and are ready to learn. Currently, 1st-4th graders receive a bully prevention lesson called Bears Den every other Friday with their teacher and a specialist. Our anti-bullying program is called OLWEUS and it is research-based. It gives students the tools to use in a bullying situation and ways to be an upstander. We also implement a Positive Behavior Intervention Support program at Valley Vista called PAWS. PAWS stands for Positive Attitude, Act Responsibly, Work Together, and Show Kindness. We expect these positive behaviors in all areas of our school. When students are “caught” showing these positive behaviors, they are given a Paws for Applause ticket to be entered into a weekly drawing for prizes!
Any student can request to meet with me or they can be referred by a teacher, administrator, or parent. I ask and encourage you to reach out if you have any concerns regarding your child. If you would like me to meet with your child, please feel free to contact me by phone or email as well.
It is my hope that this school year will be full of successful experiences for all of our Valley Vista students!
