North Royalton Food Service Department Provides Update at October Board Meeting
Several new updates have taken place to the North Royalton City School’s Food Service Department to not only add excitement to school lunch but to make the students healthier as well. Since 2014, school lunch options were seen as unappetizing but now the department has found ways to have fun food options while still following the USDA mandated guidelines for school lunch. All of the schools in the district now have breakfast options, full service lunches and a la carte options.
At the high school there are now five to six options that students are able to choose from for lunch. Some options include a self-serve pizza bar and salad bar. Another new exciting edition is the bistro where students are able to get gourmet coffee, gourmet pizza and hot and cold sandwiches. High school students were also given many promotions to get them excited about the upgrades like the hamburger festival and taste testing of the new menu items.
Middle school students now have access to “grab and go breakfast” as well as three new lunch lines. These include the Grizzly Bear Pizza Line, Polar Bear Quick Pick and the regular lunch line.
The addition of breakfast to the three elementary schools has proven to be a success as well. Elementary students are given three different breakfast options daily. Also, currently the elementary school principals are holding contests to help promote the new breakfast options and to build excitement for the students. The lunch program has also been updated to include more options.
Students across the district are getting excited about school lunches again. This is great news to the department as they have estimated that over 4,600 students, including those with the reduced lunch program, are served on a daily basis.
“It’s great to see our students excited about these new lunch options,” said food services director and dietician, Sue Rudolph, “and it’s even better to know that they leave the cafeteria happy and healthy.”
