On May 12-13, two seventh-grade members of the North Royalton Middle School’s Power of the Pen team competed in the state competition at Otterbein University. Sofia Savchenko and Nyah Palmer made it into the final round of the competition and Palmer took fourth place in the state. More than 500 students from Ohio qualified to compete in this competition.
“I am very proud of Nyah and Sofia, as well as the rest of the team, for their accomplishments this season and their hard work through remotely held district and regional competitions. The two state competitors had to make the adjustment to an in-person state competition, and did so effortlessly,” said Randy Radtke, 7th grade ELA and Power of the Pen coach.
Power of the Pen teams consist of six members who compete in prompt-based narrative writing tournaments. Each tournament consists of three rounds of writing, each lasting 40 minutes. This season, the NRMS eighth grade team placed second in the district tournament.
Power of the Pen is the leading interscholastic program in written expression. North Royalton City Schools has had a team for numerous years and it has positively impacted academic achievement in the District. More than 3,000 students competed in Power of the Pen this school year.
