North Royalton City Schools is proud to announce Lydia Cancilla as the recipient of the 2024-25 Friend of Education award. A dedicated volunteer and legal advisor to the high school’s Mock Trial team for the past five years, Cancilla has made a lasting impact on students and the program through her tireless commitment, expertise, and mentorship.
A seasoned litigation attorney who now serves as a product attorney, Cancilla has gone above and beyond in her volunteer role—often spending 30 to 40 additional hours outside of the 40–50-hour practice schedule reviewing case materials and preparing students for competition. She has helped students break down complex, 200-page legal case files each year, guiding them through interpreting legal documents, outlining witness statements, and applying case law with precision.
Under Cancilla’s leadership and mentorship, students have developed essential courtroom skills such as crafting opening statements, building direct and cross examinations, and delivering compelling closing arguments. Her support has contributed to the team reaching the District level twice and competing at the State level multiple times over the past four years.
Beyond technical guidance, Cancilla is credited with doubling the size of the program—allowing two teams to compete this year—and with helping students secure prestigious law internships. Thanks to her network and coaching, several students have worked directly with prosecution lawyers, even contributing to proposed legislation for the state of Ohio. Many alumni of the program are now on law tracks in college.
Her influence extends well beyond the courtroom. Cancilla is known for creating a welcoming, empowering environment during practices, investing in the personal growth of each student. From bringing pizza to boosting confidence, her impact resonates with both students and their families. At a recent recognition night, numerous parents personally thanked her for her dedication to their children’s success.
“There is no doubt that our program’s growth and success are because of Lydia,” said one staff member who nominated her. “She gives students real skills that will carry them into any profession. We would not be where we are without her.”
