North Royalton High School alumna Penny Kmitt (Class of 2016) is earning national recognition in broadcast journalism with her latest assignment: covering the Super Bowl for the CBS affiliate in Boston.
A 2020 graduate of American University, Kmitt has built a strong career in television reporting — a path that was clear to her former teachers as early as her days in North Royalton’s Broadcasting program.
Her former broadcasting instructor, Michael Hemery, recalls that even as a student, Kmitt stood out immediately.
“There are some students who just have it, and Penny had it,” said Hemery. “She had the drive, the personality, the intellect, the creativity — and the voice. From her very first broadcast, she sounded like a professional. It was obvious she was destined for this career.”
During her time at North Royalton High School, Kmitt not only excelled on camera but also helped behind the scenes. She played a key role in refreshing the school’s broadcasting studio during a hands-on renovation, contributing creative elements that are still used in student broadcasts today. She also appeared in several long-running intro segments that continue to be part of the program.
Kmitt has remained closely connected to her alma mater. She has returned to speak with broadcasting students, delivered a morning news segment during a visit back to the studio, and continues to mentor aspiring journalists. According to Hemery, she regularly responds to questions from students who are seriously considering entering the field. “She’s always been willing to help the next group coming up,” he said. “Even with a busy schedule, she takes the time to answer students and offer guidance.”
Now reporting for the CBS station in Boston, Kmitt will be part of the station’s Super Bowl coverage team this weekend — a milestone moment and a proud achievement for the North Royalton graduate.
Her journey from the North Royalton High School studio to one of the biggest events in sports broadcasting continues to serve as an inspiration for current students interested in media careers.
