Students Celebrate Culture and Community at First Heritage Day

Students at North Royalton Elementary School recently celebrated culture, tradition, and community during the school’s first Heritage Day, a new event designed to highlight the diverse backgrounds of students and families across the school.

The celebration, held on March 18, brought students together to learn about cultures from around the world while honoring their own family histories. Throughout the day, students participated in activities focused on music, traditions, history, and cultural pride.

Many students proudly wore traditional clothing that reflected their family heritage, while others chose shirts representing their country of ancestry. Some students also wore red, white, and blue to celebrate the United States. The colorful display created a joyful atmosphere across the building and sparked conversations among students about their cultures and traditions.

Principal Vince Ketterer said the goal of Heritage Day was to help students better understand and appreciate the diversity within their own school community. “Our school community is filled with rich traditions, diverse cultures, and meaningful family histories,” he said. “Heritage Day gave students a special opportunity to learn about one another and celebrate what makes our school so unique.”

Leading up to the event, morning announcements throughout the week featured music representing cultures connected to the school’s English Language Learner population, many of whom are new not only to North Royalton, but also to the United States.

Teachers also incorporated discussions and activities that encouraged students to explore their own backgrounds and learn about the traditions of others. The experience helped foster respect, curiosity, and a deeper understanding among classmates.

School leaders say the event was a meaningful step in continuing to build an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students at North Royalton City Schools.

“Our goal is to create a joyful celebration where every child feels proud of their background and excited to learn about others,” said Ketterer.

Following the success of the inaugural celebration, Heritage Day may become a new tradition at North Royalton Elementary, continuing to highlight the many cultures that make up the school’s vibrant community.
