North Royalton Middle School Student Honored for Compassion, Leadership, and Dedication to Peers

North Royalton Middle School is proud to celebrate eighth-grade student Josie Postma, who has been recognized with the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio’s Excellence in Education Outstanding Peer Achievement Award.

Josie earned this honor for her exceptional compassion, leadership, and commitment to supporting others, particularly through her role as a peer helper in the school’s Specialized Art class. In this role, she has gone above and beyond to create meaningful connections with students, thoughtfully adapting projects and instructions to meet individual needs. Her creativity and attentiveness help ensure that every student feels included, engaged, and successful.

Known for her patience and positive attitude, Josie consistently steps forward to assist students with the most complex needs. During a recent bowling outing, she calmly supported a student experiencing anxiety, demonstrating empathy and reassurance in a challenging moment. Whether working hand-over-hand with classmates on art projects or offering encouragement, Josie creates a safe and welcoming environment for all.

In addition to her direct support of students, Josie serves as a leader among her peers. She helps guide fellow peer helpers and advocates not only for the students she supports but also for her own growth. Her dedication is evident in her decision to adjust her schedule so she could continue working in the Specialized Art classroom, a reflection of her genuine passion for helping others.

“A well-rounded student who excels socially, academically, and athletically, Josie is respected and admired throughout the school community,” said Principal Erin Calabrese. “She has expressed interest in pursuing a future in special education, and her actions already reflect the heart and commitment of an educator.”
