For nearly four decades, the North Royalton Educational Foundation has been dedicated to enriching educational opportunities for students and teachers. Established in 1986, what began as a focused effort to support classrooms has grown into a cornerstone of support for students, staff, and families throughout North Royalton City Schools. At its core, the work of the Foundation reflects the district’s mission to inspire and empower every learner to become future-ready.
“The Foundation exists to open doors for students and teachers that might not otherwise be possible,” said Aldo Filippelli, president of the North Royalton Educational Foundation. “For 40 years, our community has come together to invest in ideas, opportunities, and experiences that make a real difference in our schools.”
Bringing Classroom Ideas to Life
Each year, the Foundation awards grants that empower teachers to bring creative and impactful ideas directly to students. These initiatives are designed to promote innovation, enrichment, increased student achievement, and alignment with district strategic goals.
Across the district, these grants have transformed classrooms by introducing hands-on learning materials, literacy initiatives, STEM-based problem-solving activities, and creative arts experiences that engage students in meaningful ways.
Recent grant-funded projects have included flexible classroom tools that enhance collaboration and movement, literacy and math centers that strengthen foundational skills, sensory materials that support diverse learners, and music resources that allow students to explore creativity through performance.
Other initiatives have provided students with opportunities to design, create, market, and sell products through entrepreneurship programs, while additional learning experiences promote critical thinking, teamwork, and real-world application of skills. These experiences help prepare students not only for academic success but also for life beyond the classroom.
Through these opportunities, students are not only building academic skills but also learning the importance of collaboration, creativity, and perseverance, values that reflect the district’s belief that all students have the potential to achieve and grow.
Specialized funding, such as the Ellie Rechkemmer Memorial Literacy Fund, further supports reading and literacy efforts at all grade levels, helping foster a lifelong love of reading among students and families.
Honoring Legacies Through Scholarships
In addition to classroom grants, the Foundation administers a wide range of scholarships and special funds established in memory or honor of individuals who made a lasting impact on the North Royalton community.

The Dan Calabrese Scholarship supports students involved in the North Royalton High School theater program.
The Linda Guzik Memorial Scholarship and Nancy Mattes Memorial Scholarship are awarded to students pursuing careers in education.
The George Hasek Memorial Scholarship and Al Vasek Memorial Scholarship provide need-based financial support to students involved in school activities.
The Luigi A. Presot Memorial Scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate leadership, service, and involvement in academics, athletics, the arts, or community organizations.
The Barbara Soggs Memorial Scholarship highlights the importance of giving back through acts of kindness and community service.
The Dr. Kasey Spirakus Special Education Scholarship supports students in special education or those planning careers in the field.
The Keith Svoboda Marching Band Memorial Fund honors dedication to the band program, particularly among percussion students.
The Larry Zajac, Sr. Memorial Scholarship recognizes students involved in the high school soccer program and their contributions both on and off the field.
Each scholarship reflects the values of leadership, service, creativity, perseverance, and community that continue to define North Royalton.
Celebrating Excellence and Building Community
The Foundation also plays an important role in recognizing excellence and strengthening connections across the district.
Each year, NREF proudly helps sponsor the Magna Cum Laude Luncheon, honoring seniors who rank in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.
Fueling Opportunities Through Community Support
The continued success of the Foundation is made possible through the generosity of the North Royalton community. Fundraising events not only bring people together but also directly support classroom innovation and student opportunities:
Friday Night Bites, returning August 28, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m., has become a popular community event featuring local food trucks and family-friendly fun. This event replaced the annual Pasta Dinner that preceded a Friday night varsity football game.
The Taste of North Royalton, held annually, will take place November 5, 2026, at the St. Paul Hellenic Center, offering an evening of food, raffles, and community connection, with participation from local restaurants, bakeries, and vendors.
Investing in the Future

Through fundraising and community support, the Foundation provides resources that enhance educational opportunities across all grade levels.
