North Royalton High School is making history this spring with the launch of its first-ever girls flag football program, marking an exciting milestone for the district and its student-athletes.
The new program features both a varsity and junior varsity team, with 21 student-athletes participating in the inaugural season. The team will compete in a 10-game schedule, with its first official game set for March 20 at Bedford High School.
Girls flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. This year marks its first season as a sanctioned sport by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, further expanding opportunities for female athletes across the state. The sport is also gaining momentum beyond high school competition, with flag football now recognized as a Division I collegiate sport and set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The team recently held its first scrimmage and coaches say the early results are promising. Players are quickly learning the game and building strong teamwork as they prepare for their first season.
“I am very excited for these girls to be the first ever Flag Football Team in North Royalton history,” said Coach Aaron Wheeler. “The first team always sets the standard. We have a group of super talented athletes and I am thrilled that they will forever be remembered as the players who started our flag football program. Flag football is a great addition to our district's athletic programs and I am proud to be a small piece of that."
“As a multi-sport athlete at North Royalton High School, I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to be a part of something new and exciting,” said Avery Keitlen. “It is fun as an athlete to try something new, challenge myself in a different way, and help pave the way for the future players. Things are coming together for the team, and there is a lot to look forward to from the group of athletes in our first flag football season.”
With excitement building around the program, North Royalton’s inaugural girls flag football team is ready to make its mark and represent the Bears on the field this spring.
