students speaking about band at the October board meeting

Members of the North Royalton High School Band Student Leadership team shared their experiences with the North Royalton City Schools Board of Education during its October 15 meeting.

The students were invited to discuss the leadership roles they held within the band program and how those responsibilities contributed to the band’s success. Representing several areas of student leadership were Chloe Yoon - Field Commander, Evan Ondrish - Band President, Peter Horrigan - Section Leader, Charles Lupica - Section Leader, McKenzie McGee - Section Leader.

Each student explained the responsibilities of their position and how the band’s student leadership structure required them to work together, communicate effectively and set an example for their peers. They also reflected on how their experiences as student leaders helped them develop skills they would carry with them beyond North Royalton High School and into college, careers and other post-graduation plans.

Leadership is one of the six competencies within North Royalton City Schools’ Portrait of a Bear and includes demonstrating integrity through consistent and ethical decision-making, as well as empowering the collective ownership of results through trust and individual strengths. The students’ remarks provided Board members with a firsthand look at how that competency came to life through the NRHS Band program.

Student leadership has long been an important part of the band’s “Tradition of Excellence,” giving generations of students opportunities to take responsibility, support their fellow musicians and play an active role in the success of the program.
