North Royalton Middle School eighth-grade student Ava Burrows was recognized at the state level after earning the Ohio 4-H Innovator Award, one of the program’s highest honors. Ava was one of only three recipients statewide and the only teenager selected, earning the award alongside adult advisory board members. She also became the first participant from Cuyahoga County 4-H to receive a state convention award.
The Innovator Award recognizes youth and adult volunteers who develop and implement creative programs that positively impact 4-H members and the broader Youth Development Program. Ava’s award honors her leadership and entrepreneurship through her quail project, which has significantly expanded interest in quail projects across Cuyahoga County.
After purchasing her first five quail at the county fair, Ava quickly immersed herself in learning and, within a year, completed industry training, hatched her first quail, and launched The Cluckity Homestead, an officially registered LLC. She earned NPIP and Small Egg Producer certifications, allowing her to sell eggs commercially, and began offering products in local stores. Her work has also earned recognition from the American Coturnix Breeders Association and features in both national and local publications.
Through her work, Ava has educated and inspired other youth by hosting informational tables at 4-H events, farmers markets, and community programs, while mentoring peers and sharing her expertise. Her innovative efforts have increased participation in quail projects countywide and strengthened her own skills in public speaking, leadership, and confidence.
Ava’s impact extends beyond her business. She serves as a Cuyahoga County 4-H Senior Leader and Junior Fair Board member, continuing to support and guide fellow participants. Her achievements will be formally recognized at a statewide banquet in Columbus, marking a significant milestone for both her and the North Royalton school community.
